 I’ve lived in Europe for 15 years now and it took me a long time to figure out why I am different than Europeans. I live in Germany. After 15 years in Europe, what I believe makes Americans American is our friendships and the loyalty to those friendships. Neighbors, our colleagues, our extended family, the lady at the supermarket....that simply doesn’t exist in Germany. Even through our differences, Americans will always be family. It’s the one thing I miss about being home, feeling that I am part of something bigger than me. We are not perfect, and we have a lot of problems, look at Detroit, but in the end, we are there for each other.
